Why are objects with transparent fill on screen solid in print?

In Publisher 2003 I want to gradually fade some dark objects so text can be
clearly written on top of the lighter spot. I was able to achieve this on
screen by covering the objects with a rectangle filled with a white gradient
effect and setting the transparency on "from" 0% "to" 100%. In print
preview, however, and on paper, the rectangle is solid. It doesn't seem to
recognize a transparency setting when a gradient fill effect is selected.
What's the deal?!?

Thanks.

This is an FAQ - and someone asked it ouky the other day - you could have
Googled to find the answer. This is a known bug as these effects weren't
supposed to be printed (MS had intended it to be used for web-design only).
The workaround is to group objects before you print then, after you group
them go to Edit > Copy then Edit > Paste Special and 'paste as picture'.
Then print.
