why are old e-mails being marked as unread?

When I go into Outook, all the e-mails are being taken from the archived
folders (old, already-read e-mails) and being loaded into my Inbox as unread?
I have tried re-booting my computer, but it continues to do this? What can I
do to keep e-mails in their correct folders?
