why are opened emails disappearing

In Outlook, when I leave my email screen and then go back after finishing
another task, emails that I have read are gone. They aren't in the 'deleted'
folder. If I do a search, they turn up.

Go to inbox click on view at the top click on current view and
check show all messages you will find all your messages
