Why are the connectors greyed out when I choose connectors?

When I chose connectors from the drawing toolbar in order to connect a flow
chart, the choices are greyed out. Can anyone tell me why and how to fix it?

If this is Word 2002/2003, you must insert a drawing canvas in order to use
working connectors.
