Why can I not change my ZOOM setting in Normal view?

I have some documents sent to me from different clients where I am unable to
increase the Zoom % in Normal View. It works fine in Outline or Reading
view. I really need to figure this out.

You obviously have Word 2003, since you have Reading View; in which version of
Word were the documents created?

Do they contain anything except plain text?

Is Track Changes or anything like that active in the document?
