Why can I not typeover a selected word?

After selecting a word to edit I type over the selected word but the type
appears to the immediate left of the selected word. Highlighting goes away.
Very annoying as it is such a common activity and necessitates more key
presses of delete button.
just started a few days ago.

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing replaces
selection" box | OK.
