Why can tables only be cut, not deleted?

In Word 97, if you select a table and press delete, the contents of the
table are deleted, but not the table itself. In order to delete the
table itself, the Cut command must be used. What is the reason for
this?

Maybe I've answered my own question. The purpose is to have two
distinct commands, one to delete the contents, the other to delete (or
rather cut) the table.

Just out of curiousity, is it possible to delete rather than cut a
table?

You'll find that if you include more than the table in your selection - the
paragraph mark after the table for instance - then delete will work. If you
select just the table, only the contents are deleted. This is the way that
majority of us want it to work... a case that MS cannot keep everyone happy
at the same time!

You can also go under Table and pick Delete Rows and the table will be
deleted.

In Word 2002/2003, this does not work if only the table is selected, but
Backspace does.
