Why can't I hear sound from an inserted mpg in Powerpoint?

I have a Powerpoint presentation in which there are two mpeg videos inserted.
While the video portion works, neither of them play the accompanying sound.
They work fine (video and sound) on WMP. The sound control in the edit window
is turned all the way up, and the mute box is unchecked.
