why can't I open a word doc with works

I get an error message that says wordpad has caused an
error in msword832.cnv? wordpad will now close. It does
this even if i try to open it with Works open and happens
with all email attachments ending in .doc.

Are you trying to open a Word doc with the Works word processor or with Word
(from Works Suite)? If the latter, then you need to reregister Word to
reestablish its ownership of the .doc file extension (see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm). If the former,
then it may very well be that Works cannot open a Word document of the given
version and is handing off to WordPad, which can't handle it, either.
