why can't i open network files?

since upgrading to ser pack 3 i can see network files but i cannot open them
- if i copy the files to my pc i can open them but i don't want multiple
copies.

its a home network so i guess i am it dept. both computers are peer to peer
with shared drives - i have used them this way for years until installing
serv pack 3 for office.
