Why can't I repair my Office XP?

My Office XP (Standard, 2002) isn't working correctly and suggests I run the
repair function. I throw the original CD in and attempt to do so and get
this error message:

"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."

I attempt to uninstall and just reinstall Office and get the same error
message. What's up with this, and how do I fix it?

Be sure to have your Office XP CD and 25-digit product key handy
before you run the installer cleanup program. After reinstalling Office
XP from your CD, you'll also need to reinstall service packs and updates
for Office XP.
