Why can't I see text of emails in reading pane or when I open the.

I can't see messages in the reading pane, or even when I open them. I have
to reply or forward to see the message. I can't see the attachments either.
If I don't forward the message, I can't open the attachment. The help text
hasn't helped me, and I can't find any settings in tools, etc. that will
change this setting. What's up?
