a. You may be using the Incorrect SMTP settings.
b. Your firewall software is blocking your e-mail client or the port for
outgoing messages (Port 25) is being blocked by your security software.
c. Your router has a firmware setting to block certain communication ports
(specifically port 25).
d. Your ISP has blocked access to port 25.
e. Your ISP may require using port 587 instead of port 25.

And this has been going on for how long? Did you wait a day to see if
the service outage got corrected? What did AOL say when you contacted
them?

When I ran "telnet 205.188.186.167 25", I got the following:

220-mtaout-db01.r1000.mx.aol.com ESMTP MUA/Third Party Client Interface
220-AOL and its affiliated companies do not
220-authorize the use of its proprietary computers and computer
220-networks to accept, transmit, or distribute unsolicited bulk
220-e-mail sent from the internet.
220-Effective immediately:
220-AOL may no longer accept connections from IP addresses
220 which no reverse-DNS (PTR record) assigned.

I could not enter the USER command to authenticate and start a mail
session (the server spewed back "502 5.5.2 Error: command not
recognized") so the above was an informational message and their server
was not accepting connections. My IP address does have a reverse DNS
lookup but that AOL server isn't accepting connections. So I tried port
587 instead of 25 but that the above same info report and no connect.

Guess you'll just have to wait out their service outage or contact AOL
about their problem.
