Why can't the main document establish DDE connection

My co-worker has a large database in Excel that he tried
to use as the data for a form letter, and it cannot be
connected as comes back with DDE connection error.

I advised him to copy and paste the data to a blank word
doc and save it for data to get it to work.

But I am curious as to what caused the connection error
and how one can fix it?
