Why can't you use Microsoft office 2003 to open microsoft office?

I'm doing a discusion in college on Microsoft office 2007 and this is the
question that we were asked to find out about. i would really appricate
anyones help in answering this question.

I think the poster means when one double-clicks a Word document, Word 2007 opens
rather than 2003.

I was told to search for a reason why you can't open files from a client that
uses microsoft office 2007 and your company still uses microsoft 2003.

Because Office 2007 uses a different file format (.docx) instead of .doc.

Of course the client with 2007 could save the files as .doc or .rtf or the
company could install the compatibilty pack (Microsoft Office Compatibility
Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats

If you have the compatibility pack, you should be able to open 2007 office
files with office 2003. The file formats are entirely different, its not just
a change in the file extension.
Sometimes informatin is lost in the translation too. I have excel files
that I sometimes have to FIX after transfering it back and forth between 2003
at work and 2007 at home.
