Why did Excel create two identical worksheets?

I am using Excel 2003 - Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600.
When I open a particular file, Excel shows that two files are open. They
are named the same but end with :1 and :2. Why did this occur and how can I
delete one of these?

You or someone else clicked WINDOW in the menu and selected NEW WINDOW. To
remove the extra window click the X close button on the right side of the
menu bar to close the extra window and resave the file. (The close window is
not the X in the red button on the title bar, which closes the app, but the
one below it)

They're actually two windows open to the same workbook.

It can be nice to see different worksheets or even different areas of the same
worksheet in separate windows.

You can close the window you don't want open by hitting ctrl-w.

Remember to save the workbook or you'll have to do it again the next time you
open it.
