Why did partial 2010 upgrade wipe out ALL my 2007 apps?

I am running Vista w/SP 1 & 2

I had Office 2007 Standard (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) to
which I had added stand-alone versions of Access 2007 and OneNote 2007.
I also had SP 1 & 2 for MS Office 2007 and the updates that had come
along.

I got the "Military Appreciation Edition" of Office 2010 for the great
price ($80). This edition says it is "Office Home and Student 2010" and
has Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

After installation, I found that Access 2007 and Outlook 2007 had been
removed and NOT replaced or upgraded. I can still start Access 97 most
of the time, but that is not very helpful. I can find a replacement for
Outlook 2007 and restore partial or even most of my functionality. I
will probably remove Office 2010 and re-install Office 2007.

But before I do that I thought I'd ask around first and see if I can't
in fact have it all. Even a somewhat lame excuse or explanation from
Microsoft would be something.

Thank you,

Steve Furse

DUH! They weren't replaced or upgraded because they are not a part of
the suite you bought.

But why were the last two wiped out?

To restate:

1) I had 6 apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and OneNote)
from Office 2007.

2) I bought a suite of 4 apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote) of
Office 2010.

3) The 4 new apps were upgraded to Office 2010. Great, that was what I
expected.

4) Two (2) of the Office 2007 apps (Access and Outlook) were also wiped
out. Not good. In fact, this is very bad.

5) Wiping out older apps, which are not being replaced, is what I want

explained. Please.

Because you overwrote the whole suite instead of a custom install?

Thank you both to "Zan A. Doo" and also to "Hoyst Owen Petard" for
bothering to answer my question.

I did indeed go back and do it over. This included:

A) Uninstalling the Office 2010 Suite.
B) Re-installing ALL of my Office 2007 apps.
C) Re-installing the Office Service Packs (#1 and #2) and other
downloadable updates.
D) 2nd try at installing the Office 2010 suite, this time choosing
the Custom button and keeping my "previous" versions.

While your help on the "How-To" aspects was useful and I am grateful for
it, it still left one unanswered question. Namely, during installation
why does the default choice destroy ALL of the previous version's apps?

I could understand destroying the previous versions of those specific
apps being replaced/upgraded. But also destroying the apps that were
NOT being replaced/upgraded strikes me as wrong. In fact, this practice
strikes me as criminal. I admit that I don't know if the practice is
legal or not, but to my mind it is criminal even if legal by the letter
of the law.

But I am still grateful for the replies given. Thank you.
