why do clients want stupid stuff?

Crash Gordon

Ok...this is just a rhetorical bitch session.

Why do clients want stupid stuff :

like fonts that no one in the world has installed on their machine? Follow up question...why can't I see the font I want...it's on our printed newsletter! - DUH!

Another one..."I don't want links to anywhere...", and the follow up..."Why isn't anyone visiting my site?" - Duh.

Why can't you use this great out of focus, washed out .jpg that has been opened and resaved so many times it's unrecognizable? Huh? Why, it looks great on my 9" monochrome monitor! ?

Does anyone have a good answer for client's like this??

:)

I'd make them pay more for being that dumb!

Hi Rob,

Been there. Done that. How you handle it depends a great deal on your money
situation, and state of business. Any client that doesn't listen to their
WebMaster and makes decisions that are counter-productive to the success of
their web site isn't likely to be a client for long. So, I have "fired"
clients in the past. But of course you have to have enough business to
support that. Otherwise, just make sure they pay you up front, and well!

Explain to them that you are quite aware that they know more about running
their business than you do, and it would be presumptuous of you to make
suggestions or demands about how they run their business.

And that they should be understanding that you know how to run your
business.

I guess I'm gonna have problems, being a Scorpio artist...I hate when people want something that just looks like crap or is just too stupid for words!

LOL.
Because they just don't understand and it's part of
the "education process"

My favorite line is "You can pay me to do it your way the first
time and then you can pay me again to do it right the second time.
OR, you can just pay me one time to do it right the first time."

"Which would you prefer"

A man after my own heart!
I usually charge double on "re-do's" due to stupidity on client's part.

I think I'm gonna start a gripe forum - or should I say; a "support" forum? "Hi, my name is Rob and my clients are making me crazy..."

Two thoughts:

o Thank your lucky stars for these clueless clients.
If they knew very much about Web design, they
wouldn't need to hire you.

o If the demands get too ridiculous, quote a ridiculous
price. "That's very hard for me to do," cuts no ice
with such people. "That'll cost you a lot of money,"
carries much more weight.

Hi Rob,

One thing to explain about links is that Google ranks sites higher with the
more "quality" links that they have. (in coming) That process though should
go both ways. Also tell her that they have retired all of the Concordes! <G>

Yah, I know, but try explaining it to someone who really should not have a web presence with this frame of mind...it's like they want it to be a little private scrapbook.

Go figure.

put a real simple CMS in their web for the "about us" section. a good one

then she can blog and scrapbook to her hearts content right through a
