Why do duplicate EML files appear after mailbox export, and how can I remove them safely?

Duplicate EML files usually appear when the same mailbox is exported more than once or when folders like Inbox, Sent and Archive contain copied messages. Some email clients also create repeated EML files during backup, import, or sync issues. So it is not always a sign of damaged data. Subject line matching is not enough for removing duplicate EML files. Check other fields like Message-ID, sender, date/time, body content, and attachment count. The same subject does not always mean a duplicate email. Keep a full backup of the EML folder before deleting anything. Then test a small folder and compare the result. For bulk cleanup, you can try GainTools EML Duplicate Remover. It can scan single or multiple EML/EMLX files and remove duplicates within one folder or across all folders. It also works without installing an email client. After cleanup, open a few saved emails and check attachments before deleting the old backup.
