Why do Excel spreadsheets embedded in Word documents freeze?

I occasionally embed spreasheets in Word documents and unfortunately they ten
to freeze up on occasion which requires that you rebuild and reinsert the
spreadsheet. This becomes quite annoying when they spreadheet is large.
