i have 3 children attending college and they're all staying with me at home,
plus my wife (4). i have 3 computers and two (2) lap top. i bought both
Microsoft XP-Home Edition and Professional, Microsoft Office 2003. recently i
upgrade my hard drive on my lap top, and try to re-install Microsoft Office
2003, naturally i have to call and get a new code, but i was told to buy a
new set of Microsoft 2003, since, i'm only allowed for two computers.Since
i'm only using it on the same house, why do i have to spend another $300 or
more, for the same software? Most people nowadays own more than two computers.

Hi Bernie,

Changing the hard drive on a machine where the copy
of MS Office was previously installed should, within
the license limits, should have been okay for getting
a code.

MS does not have a 'per household' license plan.
Licensing is generally to an individual/machine.
The End User License Agreement (EULA) is in the
Help menu of your Office apps.

Retail packages of MS Office 2003 allow the installation
for the same person on a 2nd device.

OEM (shipped with new PC) versions of MS Office 2003 are
tied to the computer they ship on and are single machine

The special edition, MS Office Student and Teachers Edition
allows use on 3 computers.

While many people may own multiple computers, its not
really 'most' (yet) and as with having a separate set
of tires for each car, purchasing separate sets of
software for each computer is fairly normal practice.

I would say it's a scam, just like the whole licensing and activation
schemes are, a scam to rip off and inconvenience paying customers.
Meanwhile, people who use illegal copies of Office can install the software
on as many computers as they like.

Oh boo hoo! Not this old chestnut again! Read the EULA.

Most households have more than one car, but they don't expect one road tax
or insurance policy to cover all vehicles. If you can afford more than one
computer then it stands to reason that you can afford more than one copy of
Office.

Nowadays, computers are cheaper than Office. Office is overpriced. The fact
that you seem to *like* the scammy EULAs is disgusting.

To the OP: get a copy of Office 2000 and install it on as many computers as
you like.

Individual lines are not required, but cable companies charge more for those
that will admit to wanting the service piped to more than one TV..

And the cable companies charge a small percentage of the monthly fee to have
other TV sets receive scrambled cable channels. Usually around $5 including
a converter/descrambler with remote for each set.

Why can't MS come up with something similar?

Greed and no regard for paying customers?

Same with Sky. You want 'multiroom' it's £100 for the extra box, plus an
extra £10pcm but they are currently waiving the £50 installation fee.
