Why do I have to click send/receive to get email into my inbox?

Have I missed something? With OE I could get email automatically, with
Outlook I have to "ask" for it to be sent to my inbox by clicking
send/receive. Is there a way of sidestepping this requirment?

Tools -> Options -> Mail Set-up -> Send/Receive then set the schedule
required.
The menu structure will vary depending on the version of outlook (you didn't
say).
