Why do I lose messages during send/receive?

I have been losing e-mail during download from the internet. So, I see that
the computer says it is receiving a certain number out of 13 e-mail messages,
and when it is done I have 2 or 4 messages with the rest gone forever. What
is happening? And is there anyway to retrieve the mail I have lost already?

Do you have any rules set up that might be moving messages to other folders
as they arrive, and/or do you have the Junk Mail feature turned on? Do an
Advanced Find to see if the missing messages are in another folder.
