Why do images appear only in reading layout and not print layout?

In word 2003 when I read/scroll in print layout the images might or might not
be visible. If they are visible they disappear as I scoll past them and
return to them. I do ot have the "picture placeholders" selected. If I change
the size of the document (e.g. 100% to 75%) the pictures will appear again,
if I use reading layout the pictures appear just fine. I have re-loaded the
software and have used the "repair" function and have downloaded all patches
etc and am frustrated by this.

Try reducing the hardware acceleration setting in Start | Control
Panel | Display | Settings | Advanced | Troubleshooting. If this
fixes the problem, then you might want to check the website of
the manufacturer of your video card/graphics adapter to see if
there is an updated driver available.

Thank you for this suggestion. I tried it and the more I decelerated, the
worse the problem became. This is quite puzzling.
