why do pictures not show in word?

P

PeterK

Only some pictures in a word document are coming up? The ones that do not
come up are outlined by a square, I can not resize them or see them. I tried
splitting the document, but they still do not come up?

A few things to try:
1. In Word, if you're working in Normal view, switch to Print
Layout view (View | Print Layout), because objects that are
formatted as "float over text" (Word 97) or as something other
than "inline with text" (Word 2002 and 2003) are not visible in
Normal view.
2. In Word, click on Tools | Options | View tab | check the
"Drawings" box and uncheck the "Picture placeholders" box | Print
tab | check the "Drawing objects" box | OK.
3. If neither of the previous suggestions fixes the problem,
then try reducing the hardware acceleration setting in Start |
Control Panel | Display | Settings | Advanced | Troubleshooting.
If this fixes the problem, then you might want to check the
website of the manufacturer of your video card/graphics adapter
to see if there is an updated driver available.

By reducing the hardware accelerator, I did not have any issues with
seeing the graphics in word. However, everything else videos, etc. are
really poor quality due to lack of hardware acceleration. I just bought
this Radeon X700 Pro (AGP) card and it should be better than my last,
which is why I find it hard to believe I can't use the hardware
acceleration. I've tweaked everything in the Word Program and updated
drivers--no luck. I am running windows XP Pro and have an ABIT KV8 Pro
motherboard. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having exactly the same problem and have the same graphics card (though
different motherboard). Sadly i'm not posting with a solution but if you ever
find out please mail me at (e-mail address removed). I'll do the same for you
should i get lucky.

Hello,

I am the Help Desk Manager for a company operating about 800 PC's. I've also
been dealing with this at our compay, ever since we switched to Office XP. I
have tweaked the Hardware Acceleration for the video card, and it seems to
have helped a bit, but depends on the size/complexity of the image. We
operate Desktop PC's with integrated video, and for business use only, so I
could care less if movies, etc are effected. But it does seem to help the
situation. Thanks for your posts. They helped me! Good luck.

Download ATI latest driver only work for a period of time, that is my
experience. I done that 3 times over the past year, latest Dec 25. I have ATI
9600 graphic card, WIndow XP SP2, Office 2003 (tried XP), LCD with 12ms(tried
CRT), 1GB ram. 1. ATI tech support tried to resolve this issue from Dec 04
through Jan 05, no solution, they said it is MS problem, MS took over till
Feb 05, told to remove Adobe Acrobat 6, known issue conflict with SP2, I did,
but no fix and they have no solution. 2. Reinstalled Office and Window, no
fix. 3. Took Garfield's advise, turn down the acceleration setting and
disabled all DirectX, it works but computer seems a little slower. 4.Then
Downloaded new ATI drivers and able to turn acceleration back to high, only
worked for awhile, problem reoccured, still having problem from time to
time. When it happens, need to close all office application, and reopen word
first, if no go, restart computer. If your pictures disappear at all times,
turn acceleration down to low. I think is SP2 problem. Anyone out there has
better luck solving this issue?

Suddenly - when i insert pictures into my word documents they behave
erratically. Usually, the picture dores not display. if i click on the place
where it should be i get the outline, if i adjust the outline size, then i
get the picture. But it will soon disapper.
I have looked at all the postings, all the suggestions - they do not work.

I have been using word for over a decade. my current version is word 2002
and i have been using that without problems for a long time. Recently i did a
major upgrade (which i waited on for a long time), including upgrade to
xp service pack 2 plus office updates. Since then, I have this picture
problem.
Older documents which had been working fine now have this picture proble.

Also, HTML documents which i download and which have simple pictures (e.g.
suit symbols for cards as i play bridge) now disappear and reappear
mysteriously. These are low resolution pictures that are not challenging
anybody's graphis cards!!!

It has something to do with Microsoft updates.

small extra to my last comment:
an HTML document shown in browser shows inserted pictures fine. Only when i
copy taxt and pictures to a word document do the pictures disappear.

I saw that. See my response. i shall stay on this thread with this problem.

Too many people have same problem - It must be real. And mine started with
my last upgrades.

FWIW, I've experienced this to some extent in every version of Word. But
then, I don't use graphics much, so I just grin and bear it. <g>

When I searched the forum, many people share the same problem, it is not
limited to ATI graphic cards. It narrows down to MS upgrade. Since I work
with word documents with images all the time, I got so frustrated that I
don't even brother to look for a solution now, I switch to using Publisher to
do my work. When I receive word documents with images that doesn't display, I
convert them to PDF or close all other office application to view.

Agree. Interestingly, open source writer works - even when word has stopped
showing the pcitures. Does seem to be a word/ XP problem. Would not advise
people to play around with their monitor on this one.

Another one here, having this same problem. I've followed all of the helpful
hints that I read and I still don't get any images. In fact, to paste just
two words and a medium sized (blank) picture takes forever. Then, of course,
the image doesn't show. I'm ready to shoot this thing!

The problem has been addressed a number of times, but in different forums -
it most likely results from the fact that you are copying from the web. The
Windows clipboard doesn't hold enough of the right kind of info to make the
distinction between the text & graphics for pasting purposes when you copy
*both* at the same time, and Word doesn't know what to make of the jumble so
it just allows pasting of the text (oversimplification & not *technically*
exact, but makes the point).

Try rt-clking the image you want, choose Save Picture As & save to your Hard
Drive, then use Insert>Picture>Create from File to insert the picture into
your doc. Copy only the text. You'll get much better results :)

All of that makes sense technically, but how do I fix the problem? I remember
seeing messages about something being saved on notebook, but I'm
thinking....I saved it to documents. What does notebook have to do with this.
So, how can I fix this problem and keep it from reoccuring in the future?

Hi Bev,

The location you save to is a personal choice. The My Pictures subfolder of My Documents is one some people use. The
Insert=>Picture from File dialog defaults to the folder set for clipart in Word's Tools=>Options=>File Locations so you may want to
save the picture there. It's not a matter of something being broken, Word's default is to paste in a link to a picture on the web
rather than an unlinked copy of the picture.

Alternatively if you are copying from the web you can use
Edit=>Paste Special in Word and choose a format other than 'HTML' (the default) for pasting the picture to see if that helps but
you may get smaller files (and have a backup copy of the picture) if you use the method CyberTaz suggested.
