Why do some people have trouble opening attachments I send them?

I have a new hp notebook, and people who previously had no trouble with
attachments I sent them now can't open them. (Mostly word documents)
I have tried sending in different formats, HTML seemed to be a problem with
one, but another can't open the attachment in Plain text, Rich text or HTML.

If you're sending the file as an attachment, the format of your email should
be irrelevant.

Well, I've already discovered through another experience that the email
format IS relevant, and that some people cannot receive attachments unless
the format is "plain text". With another, we have found that if the email is
sent in HTML, neither the email nor the attachment get delivered, but if that
same email is sent in Rich Text, it all arrives properly. So the relevance
is established. The reason...not so much.
