Why do some symbols print as question marks (?) ?

When I insert the sign for INCREMENT (∆) it looks correct on the screen, but
will print as a question mark (?) How do I prevent this? Does it have to do
with the printer or it's driver? I am printing to a Canon ImageRunner 5000i.

Typically it does have to do with the printer driver - it doesn't
support the symbol you are using. What application are you using and
how did you obtain the symbol and which font are you using?

I am using Microsoft Word 2003 SP2. The symbol I used is included in the
standard version of word.
The following are the specifics of the font:
∆ INCREMENT, Character code: 2206 from: Unicode (hex)
I beleve it is the printer driver as I was able to print it correctly on my
HP Laserjet 1300 at home?
Thanks for your help. I think I will "just write it off" for now.
Have a great day Ms. Melton!
