why does a visio chart only open as a stencil?

When I look at the detal of the vsd file, it is fine but when you open it the
stencil shows up instead of the picture

How are you doing this? What does it show?

but when you open it the stencil shows up instead of the picture

Are you sure that it isn't just a stencil anyway that has been renamed
as a vsd file?
