Why does "Calculating" show/upper left hand corner when saving?

Say what? I have no idea what you are talking about. Help us out here,
give some more detail.

I've never seen it when saving. It does do it during levelling complex
projects where the process may take several minutes.

It essentially is trying to tell you that the application is busy and
has not crashed or hung.

"Calculating" is probably not the best choice of word they could have used.

Adding a bit to Dave's reply -- do you have calculation set to
manual? If so, you may see the "Calculating" message appear longer
than those with automatic calculation set. I suggest checking you
calculation setting in Tools > Options.
