Why does date come up when I enter numbers in cell/Excel?

I am working In Excel Office 2003. When I put a number or amount in a cell,
a date comes up each time. I have looked through alot of information and
can't seem to find out what causes this.

Dates in Excel are just specially formatted numbers. So if you just change
the format, you should be okay. (Use one of the styles --comma, percent,
currency-- that you probably have on your toolbars or, from the menu bar,
Format > Cells, select the number tab and choose an appropriate format).
