Why does Entourage hang during rebuild?

Entourage is telling me I only have 50 megs of space left in my
database. It says to delete large attachments and rebuild the
database.

I deleted about 3,000 files with attachments. I know this has had a
significant effect because Entourage launches much faster now.
However, it still tells me I have only 50 megs of space left in the
database. Every time I try to do a typical rebuild, it hangs at the
start of the rebuild.

What do I need to do to make the rebuild work?

thank you,

Ian

Main thing is to make sure you have plenty of space left on the start-up
drive - at least twice as much free space as the size of the database.

Note: due to a bug in entourage, if you have moved the identity files to a
different drive, even if that has tons of space you still need to have the
space free on the startup drive.

Hi Barry,

Thank you. I'm still a little uncertain about what to do. i have 8
gigs free. I have two Entourage databases: one says Database and it is
4 gigs. The other says Database (rebuild) and it is 3.7 gigs (I
didn't move the identity and i don't know how this one was created
today because it always hung during the process). The DB size seems
really big, especially considering how much stuff I deleted. I want to
rebuild the DB to make everything clean and streamlined but it when I
try, it just says "Preparing to rebuild 0 of 0" and doesn't do
anything else. And when I launch Entourage now, it is telling me I
only have 50 megs left instead of the 100 it was telling me earlier in
the day.

Your OS needs breathing room. The OS uses your hard drive when it needs more
memory. Some say 10%. To free up some space, see the link at the bottom of
this page:

Whatsize is a good one to see what folders you have that are large and
possibly contain files that could be deleted.

What version of Entourage are you using? It sounds like Entourage X since
Entourage 2004 has no limit in the database.

I highly suggest you look at the promotions for Office 2008. Buying Office
