why does home and student ad .docx to the name of a document?

I am having an issue with the Home and Student 2007 Edition not being
compatible with the Professional 2003 Edition of Microsoft Office. They
should be compatible.
Instead of a document ending in .doc, when I try to email it, it is ending
in .docx and you cannot open the file with another version of Microsoft
Office.

There is a round button in the top left hand coner of the Word screen, click
on it and then select "Word Options" at the bottom of the window, select
"Save", in the drop down pane labled "Savefiles in this format" select
"Word97-2003 Document (*.doc)", this will change the default format to .doc.
You can also do the same thing for Excell and powerpoint etc.

Office 2007 changed file formats and to distinguish these it uses four character file extensions. An explanation is available at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA100069351033.aspx

You can use Office Button=>Save As=>
and choose the Word/Excel/Powerpoint 97-2003
choice to save in the older versions.

Office versions 2000, XP/2002 and 2003 can be fitted with a Compatibility Pack (a free download) that allows those versions to both
open and save in the new file formats. From Office 2007 you can choose to save in the older formats as your default
