Why does IE7 freeze up?

While browsing w/IE7, occasionally the screen will go blank. I proceed to
check my task mgr which shows IE7 "not responding". This whole process is
making my research difficult to say the least. Why does IE7 freeze up so
much. I have read blogs from others that have experiened the same thing. Is
there any way to switch back to IE6?
