Why does it skip more than one space when I press enter?

Why does what skip?

Are you implying that the enter key inserts extra space between paragraphs?
That being the case you have space before or after set as part of the
paragraph formatting in the current paragraph style.

Or the vertical alignment is set to Justified instead of Top (Layout tab of
Page Setup).
