Why does language change in my Word documents?

I am having problems with language changing from English to French or Spanish
when working with a word document. We are running Windows XP and Microsoft
Word 2000. Any solutions??

Open a new document then:

Tools > Language > Set language

Is the box before "Detect language automatically" checked? If so, uncheck
it. OK. Save the blank file. And exit Word. If the program asks if you want
to save changes to normal.dot, say "Yes".

The "Detect language automatically" was not checked. It seems when I try to
spell check it catches English words saying they are spelled incorrectly and
it wants to change the word to French or Spanish. It is only in certain
documents that it does this.

Possibly "Detect language automatically" is turned on in those documents?
It's worth checking.

If all else fails, what I do in situations like this is open a fresh blank
document (w/o language detection turned on) open the problem document,
control-A, control-C, go to the new document, control-V, and in the "Paste
Options" choose "Match destination formatting" and if that doesn't work undo
everything and pick "Keep text only". That should strip out any language
info embedded in the document. In one extreme case I recall having to run
the text through Notepad to get rid of everything.

Thanks Bob, I will try all of your options. I am sure one of them will work.

Have a great day!
