why does my screen jump to top when i am typing an email?

When i am typing an email and it has initially scrolled down so that the
cursor remains in view, the screen view - not the cursor - suddenly jumps to
top of email again. this is EXTREMELY annoying (and quickly going beyond
that). even if i scroll the screen back down, it does it repeatedly. GRRRR.

Try opening Outlook in Safe Mode -- that will disable any add-ins you have
installed. Perhaps one of them is causing the problem. Close Outlook, click
the Windows Start button, click Run, then in the box type "outlook.exe /safe"
(without the quotes).

Did anyone find a resolution to this. One of my users is having the same
problem, for some reason while he is typing the screen jumps to the top of
the email message, even though the text he is typing is still being entered
at the bottom of the email message. He is fit to be tied and thinks we made
a mistake to update from Office XP to Office 2007 because of this bug.

I will try to run it in Safe Mode to disable any plug ins to see if the
issue still occurs, but I doubt this will resolve anything. I will get back
to you on this.

Has anyone else reported these issues beside me and pluci?

This problem is happening in our office too--intermittently, several
times a day--to the Outlook 2007 (XP Pro) belonging to our CEO (of
course!), who is fit to be tied as well; I may have to roll back to
Outlook 2003. I have tried many suggestions, but I have not been able
to fix it yet.
It does occur in Safe Mode as well. I cannot reproduce it on my
workstation. I have a hunch it is a coding bug in Outlook/Office 2007,
possibly in one of the libraries (wwlib.dll, mso.dll, etc), enabled by
some unusual settings in Outlook, in the register, and/or somewhere
else in XP/Vista. It is apparently happening to some "victims" in
offices where others have identical software installations and are not
affected, so I don't think it is a problem with the problem
workstation having some different version of a .dll or driver
installed. Our CEO's workstation had identical hardware and was set up
at the same time, with identical software as two other users, as far
as I know.

Does your user use HTML mail, and is magnification (zoom) set to
anything other than 100%?

This problem has been reported by many, many people (some reporting on
multiple occurrences) in this and other discussion groups, and is
probably much more common than anybody realizes (including Microsoft),
but I have not seen any solutions yet:

I opened a support case with Microsoft email support, but have not found a
solution from the suggestions that had so far.

But I did some additional testing on the system that is experiencing the
problem. the person using this system likes to use large fonts as it is
easier for him to see what he is typing.

This is what I did so far to correct the jumping issue (that is until I am
told that it did not work in the long run).

He was using the font "ARIEL BLACK 12 PT BOLD" for New and Reply To email
messages. I changed the font to "TAHOMA 12 PT BOLD" for both and for his
signature. This seems to have correct the issue of the page jumping to the
top. I do not know why it would matter, but it seems to have improved the
situation.

Also, before I changed the fonts I tried running Outlook in safe mode, but
that did not provide any good results. I also renamed a few DAT files, but
no luck. Here are the DAT files I renamed per MS Supports suggestions.

Outcmd.dat - This file is where Outlook stores all the changes that you make
to your toolbar.
This is where the Adware, Spyware and Virus applications normally hit. This
file can be corrupted, it can be found here:

Extend.dat - This file is an internal cache file used by Outlook to store
paths to all DLL files used for Outlook extensions

Frmcache.dat - This file is as an index of the individual forms that have
been cached on the computer

Views.dat - This file may exist on your computer only if you have not
created a custom view on your folders.


I hope this helps some of my fellow Outlook 2007 sufferers.

The user that is having the problems with this sends and receives email
messages manually and he uses Rich Text and not HTML.

I tried a number of fixes as suggested from Microsoft, but nothing seems to
apply to this issue. I also think there is some buggy code at the core of
the problem and keep hoping that Microsoft will release a fix for it very
soon.

In the mean while I am planning on creating an new Windows XP User Profile
for this user as I think he has something in his settings that may be
contributing to the problem. I do not know of anyone else of the the people
I support (30+) having this problem. He is not available for me to do the
new profile, but I will post back afterwards to provide the results of this
"shot in the dark" fix.

And me! It's enormously annoying, and I can't figure it out. It seems
to occur when the characters in a line length are longer than a
previous one, but this doesn't seem to happen when the message is
still all visible and the scoll button is at the at the top, only if
the scroll button has moved, at which point it'll jump back to the
top. I'm even condsidering writing emails in haiku until a resolution
is found.

I have a user who has an annoying issue when composing a new email.
When the body of the message exceeds the vertical size of the text

I'm experiencing a new problem, and can't figure out why. When i'm
composing a long message, the message window scrolls strangely, and
displays the top of the window, such that I'm not seeing what I'm
typing. Text entry is happening in the right place, but the window

I'm typing, and as soon as the line wraps, it happens again. ugghh
This seems to happen whether i'm using HTML, Rich Text, or plain text.

So does Microsoft plan to apply a fix to this issue or are they just going
to let us suffer and ponder the option of switching to Open Office? I have
on person out of 30 who is having this problem, but of course it happens to
be the boss. And we all know how bosses can be, they do not understand the
technical stuff, they just say, "Why am I paying for this junk from
Microsoft? Let's switch to Open Office."

I would really rather have Microsoft provide a fix to this issue post haste.

Hey all, here are some relief as to why this is happening....i hope. I had
this issue with a number of my users on different systems. I called
microsoft support and opened a ticket. They persisted at first that it was
my programs that interfere....after i think about a month or two of going
back and forth and pointing fingers....I decided to do a video capture of my
desktop and simulated it. I sent it back to them and that was the first time
they truly understood and decided to somewhat be more helpful. After another
long bout of going back and forth, i finally did something really really
silly. I logged my keystrokes on a piece of paper and discovered that at
certain settings, with certain keystrokes, this would happen. I sent the
keystrokes and settings to microsoft and their tech was finally able to
produce it.

The common things among my users having this issue is that that they have
emails that are zoomed in or resolutions that are really low. This means
outlook keeps having to readjust lines more often. BTW, it had happen to
most of our senior partners....probably because they have bad eyesight.

So far, microsoft said they admit it is their fault when i described the
exact settings they needed to trigger it... They refunded my money but said
they will work on this. haven't heard from them yet.

So solution for your people is turn the resolution higher and zoom to normal
zoom of 100%. It should solve problem.

I don't have the exact settings and keystrokes needed anymore, but if i find
i will post it and you can test it out to see if you have a similar problem.

Changing the font fixed it for me. This is an annoying problem indeed.
