WHY DOES MY SYSTEM ALWAYS LOCK ON REBOOT?

When ever I restart my computer, I get a "-" inthe upper left corner of the
monitor. No matter how long I wait nothing happens. If I shut of the computer
and start fresh it seems to work fine.
