Why does my word 2003 attachments become winmail.dat files in AOL.

I am using outlook 2003 and sending word 2003 attachments to co-workers who
use AOL. They receive my email attachement as a winmail.dat file and can't
open it even though they too have Word 2003. What is the problem?

The problem is that you're sending in Rich Text format, which AOL can't
handle. Choose HTML or Plain Text.
