Running Outlook 2002 SP2.
Periodically, I'll receive a message from my ISP that some mail message
couldn't successfully be sent. Examining the message it was trying to send
revealed that the message was a read receipt being returned to some spam
address that doesn't actually exist. Originally, I had read receipt requests
set to prompt for what action to take but these receipts appeared to be
going out automatically without notifying me. I also tried changing the
option to never return read receipts but I still get these messages
indicating that a read receipt is, in fact, being sent.
I've sent myself several test messages from another machine requesting a
read receipt and Outlook faithfully follows the setting for those messages.
Any idea why some of them *do* get receipts anyway?
Is this a known bug (more like a glaring defect, really)? I've tried a
handful of searches to see if anybody has had a problem like this or, more
importantly, if anyone has solved it. There was a thread last fall asking
about this same problem but apparently nobody had an answer (or bothered to
post one.) This doesn't inpsire confidence that I'm going to get this
problem resolved.
It really bugs me that the hundreds of spam I'm getting everyday may be
sending read receipts without my knowledge and in spite of my expressed
intentions to the contrary all because Outlook is a buggy piece of junk.
Thanks, in advance,
Doug Harber
