Why does Outlook Express constantly ask if I want to compact messa

N

New Hill Mark

On startup, start and close of program, checking email and occasionally
randomly, I get a service message pop up from Outlook Express stating
"To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take
up to a few minutes."
I suspect virus, so rather than click "OK" or "Cancel", I close the box.
I have Norton 360, and my computer is supposedly clean. Any help on getting
this message from popping up?
Thanks,
Mark

OE does this every 100 launches. It's NOT a virus and you would be
well-advised to let it do so, otherwise you risk corruption of data.

BTW, for future reference:
This newsgroup is for support of Outlook
97/98/2000/2002/2003/2007 from the Office suite of products. Outlook
Express is actually a separate program despite the similar name.

For help with your OE questions, try an OE newsgroup such as
microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general (for OE 6), or
an OE help website such as http://insideOE.tomsterdam.com. If you're
accessing the Microsoft newsgroups through the MS Product Support
Services "Community Newsgroups" web interface, click
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...px?dg=microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general
Good luck!

This newsgroup is for support of Outlook 97, 98, 2000, 2002, 2003 & 2007
from the Office family for Intel PCs. For Outlook Express (OE) & Windows
Live Mail support try posting in one of these newsgroups:
microsoft.public.inetexplorer.ie4.outlookexpress for OE 4.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x
microsoft.public.internet.mail.mac for the Macintosh version of OE
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop for Windows Live Mail

If those groups aren't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

Another good source of info can be found here:
