When working on a document, my machine freezes up, and I must reboot. No
problem with other Office 2003 apllications...

It shouldn't freeze up at all. What is the pattern? What are you commonly
doing when this happens?

Have you defragged your hard drive recently and cleaned out your Temp folder?
What anti-virus software do you have running? How large is your presentation?
Does it happen with all files you work on?

I start editing a document, and as I move the mouse it freezes up. Must do a
hard reboot!

It doesn't happen with other applications. I even reinstalled Powerpoint,
but to no avail. Haven't defragmented in a while, nor cleaned the temp
folder (will do now), yet why would this only happen in powerpoint.

files are small, Norton and Ad-Aware.

Happens in a new file or existing...

Open Norton Anti-Virus and under Options locate Miscellaneous. Do you have the
Office plug-ing activated? Try disabling it. Does that correct the problem?

Try turning down the hardware acceleration a couple of clicks and see
if that helps. You can always turn it back up slowly again.

How to set graphics hardware acceleration back

Also, I know you said you have a printer driver installed, but I'd still
check that section at
Do this before using PowerPoint seriously

It could be that your printer is on a network. That will sometimes cause
problems.

I'd also use the technique described at
Norton Anti-Virus and Office
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00387.htm
to disable the NAV Office Plug-In that Sonia mentioned.

I had the same problem, following the advice of one of the other replies I
backed off the video hardware acceleration and it seems to have fixed the
problem. I have integrated intel video, P4, late model mb.
