Why does the last row of a table have different formatting?

In Word 2007, why does the last row of a table have different formatting? The
font appears to be the same settings, but it's one shade lighter than the
rest. I'm at a loss for how to fix it.

Does it print that way? My experience has been that it does not and that it
is some combination of display driver/operating system that causes it
(intermittently).

Sounds like it could be governed by a table style as Susanne suggests. On
the table tools > design tab > table style options group, clear the check box
before Total row.
