Why does word 03 run slow when opening doc with custom template?

When opening a Word 2003 document that has a custom template attached, the
document opens very slow the first time. If the document is closed and opened
immediately then it is fast. If there is a break in time after closing the
document for say 5 minutes the document will open slow again. Also, this
happens regardless of the document name. If DOCA with custom template is
opened there is a delay the first time. If DOCB with custom template is
opened it opens fast. After 5 minutes, if DOCB is opened, there is a delay
again. If DOCA is opened after DOCB there is no delay. There has to be
something in the custom template that is causing the delay. The template
looks at a data file for mail merge and 2 other text files for parameter
settings. What kind of funtions would degrade the performance in the
templates? Thanks a lot in advance. SM.

Same folder as where the .doc file is.

And that would be...? On your local machine? A network share? A SharePoint
repository?

All the document files and templates are on the local computer C:\docs. They
are referenced with the full path in the document template section. The merge
data file referenced in the macros is also on the local computer and declared
with C:\data.doc. The parameter files are being read from the local hard
drive as well.
Thanks.
