why does word file get bigger when print?

I have a 3MB word file. When it goes to the printer, it becomes 87MB and
gets stalled. Why is that and what should I do?

The document has to be rasterized (converted to a bitmap) to send to the
printer (unless you use resident fonts, in which case I believe the process
may bypass this step).
