Why does Word freeze up when opening?

I have a client that has MS Works suite and for some
reason now when ever the cilent goes to open Word to
create a new document or to open a current document it
locks up the machine. But, now here's the twist, the
customer can how ever open up MS Works task and start a
new Word document from there, but once again no curret
documents can be opened.

You might suggest that your client uninstall the Microsoft Works Suite
Add-in for Word, which causes numerous problems with Word run freestanding
(not started from the Work Task Launcher).

If that were the case, then I would find it curious that he could create a
Word file using the Works Task Launcher, but I don't have any experience
with this, so I'll admit defeat on that score. He might see

troubleshooting tips.

I have Windows XP on my system with Works and office. AND
when I open word it freezes and then closes immediately.
However I am able to open up excel and other office apps.
BUT NOT WORD.
WHAT TO DO?
