Why does Word insert bookmarks on its own?

Word inserts bookmarks on its own. I know how to use the bookmark feature,
but don't understand why Word does this when I did not select to add a
bookmark. I frequently have to delete bookmarks that just suddenly appear in
my documents.

Word inserts hidden bookmarks when you insert cross-references or generate a
TOC or index. But if you're seeing bookmark brackets, then this is a
different issue. There have been reports of mysterious OLE bookmarks
appearing for no apparent reason, but I don't remember whether anyone has
determined the cause.

Hi all,

Usually, but not always, Word's OLE_LINK bookmarks are the result of a
selection being copied and pasted elsewhere as a link. Sometimes, though,
they crop spontaneously up after a plain copy/paste operation. So don't just
automatically delete them.

Cheers

Yes, these are OLE_LINK bookmarks that usually appear when I copy and paste
from another doc. I never have a problem when I delete them because they're
not related to something I need in my doc. I'd just like to stop this from
automatically happening.
