Why does Word prompt for save when no changes have been made?

This has bugged me for years!

I've read the help screens, examined all the settings and options
(yes, ALL!) between some documents that do it and others that don't,
and can find no difference.

Am I missing something really obvious?

Thanks in advance.

This happens because Word saves changes made to the Document
Properties. The usual culprit is the 'Printed' timestamp, which is
updated whenever you print your document. So, if you open a document,
print it and close it, Word will prompt you to save as it has changed
the Document Properties behind the scenes.
Hope this helps.

What you say is no doubt true, but it doesn't explain most of the
occurrences here - eg yesterday I opened a doc, read it on screen, then
closed it, and was given the choice of saving the "changes". It's never
been printed.

Ah well, it's no real problem - just interested to know what causes it.
Thanks for reply.
