why don't my connector lines lock to drawing objects?

When I use connector lines connector sites no longer appear on the drawing
objects I'm connecting and the lines don't lock to the objects. I don't
remember changing a setting - in fact I can't find a setting.
I'm using Word 2003 sp2

Connectors only work when using the drawing canvas.
