Why error when applying SP2 to Office 2003 installation?

G

Goran Ivanic

I downloaded the MsOffice 2003 SP2 from the MS web pages and tried to apply it to
my Office 2003 installation.
Much to my surprise an error window pops up informing me:

"The update cannot be applied"

Why ?

The "About" box of my Word 2003 (under Win2000+SP4) shows as version: 11.5604.5606

No "SP2" label is visible. So I guess SP2 is currently Not applied.

What else could be the error?

How can I find out if SP1 is already applied or Not ?

Your issue may have occured because the Microsoft Windows Registry
is corrupted and a registry key that provides the path of the original
installation source for the Microsoft Office 2003 program is missing.
Or, some third-party programs that modify the Microsoft Windows
Registry removed the registry keys that are required by the Office 2003
Setup program.

See the following for troubleshooting advice:

There should be a log file under C:\Temp, C:\Windows\Temp, C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Temp or your user C:\Documents and Settings\[USER
NAME]\Local Settings\Temp.

Clean out any of the above Temp folders (if they exist), run your setup
again, and find where the log file is. The error should be there.

Also, check EVENTVWR.MSC and see if there is an MsiInstaller error.

Another method, which I use consistently, is using FileMon from
www.sysinternals.com. You can monitor what is going on while running the
setup program ... which will also reflect what log pathname is being used.
It will also show, sometimes, why it is aborting.
