why have all my Office 2003 programs frozen

My son has a student version of Office 2003, supplied by his school, which he
installed 3 weeks ago. All the programs have now frozen. When you try to type
in Word the bottom bar displays"this modification can not be made because the
proram is locked". We have tried following the Online suggestions without
success, and tried the "activate product" under the help topic. We had this
problem before and blamed it on a 30-day trial version supplied with the new
PC but this student version is not a trial package so far as I can see. Any
suggestions? Could it be a virus?

Probably not a virus. Probably an activation problem. Did you
uninstall the trial version *before* installing the student
version? On my computer, if I start Word and click on Help |
Activate Product, I get a popup that says, "This product has
already been activated." What do you get? See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823527 "Activation Wizard does
not start in Office 2003".

When I click on Activate producr nothing happens, no pop-up box. I can open
files but can,t write or amend anything. I've tried your link "Activation
Wizard does not start in Office 2003" and followed instructions but no
change. Any other suggestions? I don't know if we uninstalled the trial
version, but we've uninstalled the current Office software and reinstalled
but no change.
